Cubic zirconia is a composite of high purity zirconia powder, magnesium and calcium. The term "cubic (cubic)" refers to the symmetry of the crystal structure and "zirconia" to its chemical composition (zirconium oxide).
Cubic zirconia is virtually flawless compared to zirconia containing inclusions and other imperfections. The synthetic material can be produced in a wide range of hues, but it is typically hard and colorless.

Since commercial manufacture of synthetic cubic zirconia began in 1976, it has remained the most significant economic and gemological rival to diamonds due to its low price, durability, and aesthetic resemblance to diamond. Here we give a brief introduction to this shiny gemstone.

History

Cubic zirconia was first discovered in 1892 and created by fusing zirconium oxide with other metals, such as silver or gold, and then heating it to extreme temperatures. Although cubic zirconia does not have the historical heritage of a natural stone, its crystalline structure has led to the recognition of the beauty of this new gemstone and its popularity worldwide.

Apperance

Many people are unable to distinguish between cubic zirconia and diamonds. Cubic zirconia has a flawless appearance and is usually colourless - the equivalent of a 'D' grade diamond, which is not as bright as a diamond, but has a more sparkling colour. Colorful cubic zirconia can also be obtained by adding different metal oxides during the production process. Cubic zirconia stones can be "customised" with lighter shades such as pink and purple being more uniform, although there are sometimes slight colour variations.

Hardness

With a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale, Cubic zirconia was found to be similar to that of diamonds. In the past, cubic zirconia was used as a diamond substitute because of its high refractive index and low price. It has become a popular material for making imitation diamonds because it is less expensive than natural ones. Cubic zirconia can be made in different colors and shapes which makes it suitable for all kinds of jewellery, regardless of the budget. This makes it an excellent choice for people who want to buy an affordable piece of jewellery without compromising on quality or appearance.

Processment

While most cubic zirconia stones are only cut and polished, the illusion collection is hot-fused and coloured—an innovative and environmentally friendly form of chemical heat treatment, patented by Swarovski, with long-lasting results.
